Self Reflection Evaluation

This semester has been a whirlwind of growth for me in terms of maturity academically, and mentally. The difficulty and degree of independence that college requires definitely took me by surprise and rattled me a bit, most prominently during finals week. However, this adversity allowed me to blossom as a technical writer, and allowed me to better able analyze my work and add more factual detail than I would compared to the start of the semester. I was able to learn how to deem what was essential information and what was not, and furlough all of the unnecessary information out of my work.

Early in the semester, I struggled to be able to section my work and be able to divide it so that is organized in a concise manner. I would often reference templates online, to no avail. During this semester, I learned how to break down the requirements of an essay or technical work such as a lab report and section it off to subheadings such as the Executive Summary, Abstract, and other things of that nature. Overall, this ability to concisely break down the parts of an essay or piece of work will be an invaluable trait and benefit not only me, but the experience of any reader reading my work.

Another weakness I came into the semester with was either not providing enough or providing too much detail in some of my technical work. During this semester in English 21007,  I feel that I really approved upon this and was able to showcase the reader only the truly important information in my works of writing without losing any meaning. One particular example of this was in the memo, where we were taught to go into excruciating detail about how to construct a paper hat. It was through this assignment that I realized that one cannot just assume the reader knows something, and it is through the expertise of the writer that you have to teach him/her that fact.

Overall, this semester in English 21007 at CCNY has been a torrential uproar of a combination of laughter, stress, and learning. Being the first semester of my college career, I am truly glad that English 21007 was apart of this to set a precedent for my future English classes and improve my writing for my future Engineering classes. Throughout this semester, I have learned skills for technical writing that I will carry with me for the rest of my academic and professional career.
